My life in pottery began like most artistic endeavors – as a blend of emotional catharsis and a desire to share the visual power that lives in my art.  Knowing that the one constant in life is change, I seek and revel in the changes that clay items undergo throughout the ceramic process.

Having spent most of my life seeking artistic satisfaction I came to “discover” ceramics quite by accident, almost as if by fate.  After years of study in various fields I began to pursue a study of photography.  It was during this time that I needed a 3D studio class to complete the requirements for the degree and enrolled in my first ceramics class.  In this personal journey of discovery a passion was kindled that rivals the flame that emanates from my kilns.  A love of science that has existed since I was a child was finally bonded with the artistic desire that had sought release throughout my entire life to produce a unique and very special piece of pottery.

When I formulate the glazes you see on my pottery I seek materials that reflect the movement of my own life.  Just as the experiences of my life have shaped me into the artist I am today it is the exposure to the flames of the kiln that causes the minerals within the glazes to melt and combine with each other to form new compounds and force them to flow in new directions.

As the flame of the kiln moves across each piece of pottery it leaves marks of its passing, these may be so slight as to be almost invisible or the mark may leave a deep scar.  However deep or shallow the scar may be, it is the mark of passing from one stage of life to another – not unlike its maker.
