180 miles from Chicago ~ 160 miles from St. Louis 60 miles from Springfield ~ 55 miles from Bloomington/I-55 35 miles from Peoria/I-74 ~ 10 miles from Pekin The Village of Manito was surveyed and planned in 1858. It consisted of 100 acres. From its inception, the railroad played an important part in its growth. A depot, post office, and other private enterprises soon formed a "Main Street" (Broadway) in town that over the years was the commercial center of Manito. Manito is now a progressive community with nearly 2000 residents. Our area has a strong agricultural background. The area's diverse soil types and plentiful water supply encourage a broad range of grain and seed crops, vegetables, melons and Christmas trees. Because of Manito's location atop the Mahomet-Teays Aquifer and our longer growing season, crop production is exceptional. You will observe many center pivot irrigation systems throughout the area.
